Diesel fuel is by nature a very unstable product and is made up of a complex blend of hydrocarbon molecules, these mainly are;
Paraffins Napthenes Aromatics
plus thousands of individual hydrocarbon compounds with carbon numbers between 10 and 22. Many things begin to cause diesel to deteriorate rapidly exposure of heat and pressure from engines and pumps causes fuel breakdown, water becoming present within the tank all lead to the formation of organic debris " Sludge " these are agglomerations of heavy molecular weight molecules, these larger fuel droplets burn poorly causing smoke, loss of power and excess fuel consumption.
This bacterial growth "The Diesel Bug " "Cladisporium Resinae" then grows rapidly as organisms multiply exponentially, i.e. one cell divides into two and two into four and so on. The visual appearance of fuel drawn off the bottom of the tank will show gelatinous matter, black or brown sludge, discoloured and hazy fuel, the fuel may also have an unpleasant odour due to the presence of hydrogen sulphide.
The rocking motion of the boat then disturbs all of the sludge and mixes it with the tank contents causing severe contaminated fuel.
The oilclear filtration process can rectify all of these fuel problems.
