With over 90% of engine breakdowns at sea caused by contaminated fuel, the scale of the problem is huge. Water vapour present in the air above the fuel storage tanks condenses on the walls of the tank as the temperature varies. This water then runs down and collects below the fuel at the bottom of the tank.
At the point where the fuel and water meet, there exists ideal conditions for the development of a microbial fungus--Cladisporium resinae--- the 'diesel bug'.
The resulting slimy sludge is drawn into the fuel system blockinhglines, filters and injectors causing breakdowns. Further damage is inflicted by the 'bug' producing corrosive hydrogen sulphide which pits metal components in the system.
The solution? Oilclear, a system which physically filters out the organic sludge and accumulated water, cleans and then treats and conditions the fuel and fuel system, and provides certification of the successful operation.
The Oilclear system pumps the fuel from the tank and circulates it through a specialised filtration and conditioning system, removing sludge, water, sand and other impurities. It will be circulated three times with 'before' and 'after' samples being taken.
At the end of the process the fuel in the engine lines, filters and injectors is drawn off. If required, new filters are fitted and treated fuel is primed through. The treatment is then documented and stored in our database along with fuel samples, and a Clean Fuel Certificate is issued.
If necessary, injectors can also be cleaned in situ. Our specialised machine containing a de-waxing and cleaning mixture is connected as a temporary bypass to the fuel supply. When coupled, passage of the cleaning fluid through the injectors dissolves the build up of fuel-borne contaminants--tars, gums and varnishes--that choke the fine orifices within the injectors.
